Mahakaleshwar Temple is a famous Jyotirlinga which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, which is said to be the holiest abode of Lord Shiva.  It is located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India.  This temple is situated on the banks of the Shipra River.
The idol of Mahakaleshwar is considered to be Dakshinamukhi.  Mahakal is decorated in many ways during each aarti.
   The Tantric tradition is found only in the Mahakal Temple out of the 12 Jyotirlingas.  Mahakal is worshiped daily in the temple by Bhasma Aarti.  In this aarti, Mahakaleshwar God is adorned with the ashes of the pyre.  Salvation is attained only by the sight of Mahakal and devotees from every corner of the world come to see Mahakal.  There is also a belief to visit the Kaal Bhairav ​​temple after the darshan of Mahakal.
In the Kaal Bhairav ​​temple, Lord Bhairavnath is offered liquor.  It is believed that the visit of Mahakal is considered incomplete if you do not see Kaal Bhairav ​​after seeing Mahakal.
On the ground floor of the Mahakal temple is the temple of Omkareshwar Mahadev.  The statue of Nandi is situated in front of Lord Shiva in the south.  There is a temple of Nagachandreshwar in the temple courtyard which opens to the general public only on the day of Nag Panchami.  There is a huge courtyard of the temple: There is a lake in the temple courtyard, Lord Shiva is bathed with its water.
This temple is also famous as Maha Shakti Peeth.
On the day of Maha Shivaratri, the temple is worshiped five times at night in the temple.
  On the day of Shivratri, a huge fair is also held on the outside of the temple.  Famous Mahakaleshwar Yatra on Shivratri which is organized by the govt.administration with full respect.
According to ancient beliefs, Ujjain was also known as Avantika Nagari. Students from every corner of the country used to come here to study the holy scriptures.
  According to ancient legends, there was a king of Ujjain named Chandrasen who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.  Ujjain's rivals decided to attack the kingdom and were successful.  He also attacked the devotees of Lord Shiva.  Devotees worshiped Lord Shiva to save themselves and the kingdom.
Hearing the prayers of his devotees, Lord Shiva appeared in his Mahakal form and destroyed Chandrasen's enemies.  At the request of all the devotees, Lord Shiva became himself by the powers of the lingam lord and his consort Parvati established in Mahakaleshwar, installed as the presiding deity.  They will be free from the fear of death and diseases.
Train and airline services are available from various places of the country to reach Ujjain. Public transport facility is available to get to the temple from outside the station by getting the train. Hotel and Dharamshala are available to stay around the temple.
